TURPS INTENSIVES

Turps Intensives are eight‑week, studio‑based courses for painters at Turps Studios in south east London taking place across autumn, spring, and summer. Each Intensive brings together a small group of artists to work intensively with regular mentoring, critique and events, ending with a final exhibition at Turps Gallery.

Who is it for? Turps Intensives are designed for painters who want concentrated studio time, regular mentoring and a strong peer group, but cannot commit to a full‑year programme. The course is especially suitable for artists based outside London or overseas, as well as those balancing studio practice with other work or responsibilities. Applicants should have an established painting practice and be ready to develop their work intensively over eight weeks in a supportive, critical environment.

Overview

• Duration: 8 weeks

• Group size: 10–20 painters per Intensive

• Studio: individual partitioned studio space with 24‑hour access, 7 days a week

• Approximately 2–3 contact points per week, comprising a carefully structured programme including 1-2-1 mentoring, artist talks, workshops, small group crits, gallery/museum visits

• Online community: one year’s access to Turps & MASS Circle, an online platform for current and former Turps/MASS artists

• A core team of Turps mentors plus visiting artists

• Final exhibition at Turps Gallery

Accommodation: Overseas and out-of-London applicants are expected to organise their own accommodation during the course. Recently we launched ARTnest, a brand new scheme, providing course participants with a database of potential short-term accommodation for the duration of the course, within the homes of the wider Turps painting network. We aim for this accommodation to be affordable and conveniently located within easy reach of the studios. Please note this is a new initiative to informally connect artists and hosts; we cannot guarantee finding appropriate accommodation. Please investigate all alternative options when applying.
